At Wimbledon Chase Primary School, we recognise that, from an early age, children have a natural enthusiasm and enjoyment of being physically active. As our children grow older, we strive to harness and nurture that early enthusiasm to help children develop a passion for physical exercise which they will take with them when they move up into secondary education and beyond.
Working together with the Merton School Sport Partnership (MSSP), we continually develop our PE Scheme of Work to ensure that all our pupils receive high quality PE lessons in line with the latest teaching pedagogy. We work hard to allow for all children to take part in both intra and inter school competitive sports. We strive to maximise the use of our spacious facilities to provide opportunities for physical activity for the children at our school.
We understand the benefit that high quality PE provision brings and there is significant evidence to show that this supports other learning right across the curriculum.
We believe Physical Education contributes to healthy and active lifestyles, improves emotional well-being, reduces poor behaviour, increases attendance and develops key skills such as leadership, confidence, social and team building skills.
Our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils develop the fundamental skills and competence to excel in a wide range of physical activities by providing a broad & balanced curriculum with opportunities for all to be enjoyed.
Our extensive extra-curricular programme of physical activity complements our curriculum and provides all children with the opportunity to engage in organised sporting activities every day before, during and after school. There is a wide range of clubs aimed at boys and girls, as well as clubs and competitions specifically adapted to be fully inclusive.
We are proud that our success has been recognised by the award of the MSSP Platinum Sports Mark for achieving a gold standard for the last 8 consecutive years, and by the receipt of the School Games Gold Award for the past three years. We are a Refspect School and are proud to have received this Award for excellence in teamwork in 2019.
We recognise that PE needs to build on the children’s natural enthusiasm for movement, by expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations.
We believe that Physical Education should lead to a sense of well-being, a greater understanding of health and fitness, a healthy lifestyle and a feeling of self-confidence.
From Reception to Year 6 all children are timetabled to receive two hours of PE and Games per week.
Sports Day
Every year in early July we hold our annual Sports Day for children from Reception to Year 6. Parents are actively encouraged to attend and cheer the children along, as well as take part in a fun parents’ race.
Swimming
As part of the National Curriculum, children have swimming lessons run by GLL at Morden Park Pools. The children go swimming for a term in Year One, Year Two and Year Three. The lessons are differentiated into three groups to allow the instructors to both support and challenge all children.
Merton School Sports Partnership (MSSP)
The school is part of MSSP and is part of the Wimbledon Cluster of Primary schools which consists of Dundonald, Wimbledon Park, The Priory CE, Holy Trinity CE, Pelham, Bishop Gilpin CE, All Saints CE, Merton Abbey and St Mary’s RC. The MSSP regularly organises tournaments and festivals between schools in the cluster.
In a number of sports such as football, tag rugby, netball, rounders, athletics and cricket, the cluster competitions have a pathway to Borough finals and the London Youth Games.
Connellan Trophy
In cricket, Wimbledon Chase is the only state Primary school in Merton to enter a hard ball cricket competition. The competition, run by the Surrey Cricket Federation, has a finals day every July held at prestigious locations.
Extra Curricular Clubs
Wimbledon Chase offers a variety of sports and dance clubs which take place before, during and after school hours. These clubs include multiskills, dodgeball, football, tennis, cricket, yoga, hockey, tag rugby, running, netball, street dance, tap & jazz.
Community Links
The school has very good links to local community sports clubs such as the Old Ruts, AFC Wimbledon, Wilton Tennis Club, Wimbledon Racquet and Fitness Club. Children are encouraged to join their local clubs wherever possible.
