English as an Additional Language

At Wimbledon Chase we welcome and celebrate the diversity that each pupil brings to our school. Through regular support we enable all pupils who have English as an additional language (EAL) to be able to access the curriculum, to aim high and reach their potential.

Through assessment and induction programmes, pupils who are new to English are given the appropriate support to enable them to take part in all aspects of school life. We encourage pupils who have EAL to be reflective and resourceful learners by giving them strategies to approach their learning in a positive and engaging manner.

Pupils at Wimbledon Chase benefit from the opportunity to form empathetic relationships across different cultural backgrounds thereby gaining a wider understanding of our society. We encourage pupils to work as part of a team and to value the linguistic skills each member of the class can bring to their class and the school as a whole.

Our intent is for the pupils to become confident communicators both in English and in their first language. We celebrate the diversity of languages represented at Wimbledon Chase so that EAL pupils continue to develop their positive self- image and become advocates for their language and culture.
